Opening on Tuesday next week: Chicane, solo show of Belgian painter Koen van den Broek at Marlborough Contemporary. A “chicane” is an artificial feature creating extra turns in a road, used in motor racing and on streets to slow traffic for safety. Roads, cityscapes and details from urban environments and architecture are a recurring subject of Koen’s paintings. The images for the paintings are selected from photographs taken by the artists during his trips across US and Europe.

There are a couple of new paintings from 2012, that we saw on the gallery’s website, which however look quite different from Koen’s earlier work. We’re very curious to find out where are these new directions leading to.
